In August 1917, after assaults by French and then British forces had failed, Canadian Sir Arthur Currie, led a force of 100,000 Canadians to victory in the Battle for Hill 70, named because it was 70 metres above sea level, overlooking Lens in Northern France. Within hours, the Canadians were able to gain the higher ground, and over the next 10 days the Germans launched 21 counterattacks. On the Canadian side, 1,877 men were killed including 21-year-old Fred Lee, who had fought earlier at Vimy Ridge, one of only a few hundred Chinese Canadians who enlisted during the First World War. In that battle there were 20,000 to 40,000 German casualties. Fred Lee's name is etched on the Vimy Ridge memorial, and he is one of more than 11,000 Canadians who were killed in action in France. His name is also etched on the cenotaph in Kamloops where he was born.
